стоит Windows 8 Pro x64
копаясь в System32, заметил что папка config весит 4ГБ ((
зашел туда, как оказалось 3.8 из них занимают 10000 тысяч копий куста DRIVERS, размером 512КБ каждая (с разными GUID'ами).
вопрос к знатокам?: ЧТО это такое?.
скрин прилагается.

В конце решение проблемы от одного участника:

After installing KB2795944, I have had no new files created since 2/20/2013. Looks like that did it!
Попробуй поставить его (http://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/download/details.aspx?id=36582 )

удалил все кроме самого куста и его логов:
DRIVERS
DRIVERS.LOG1
DRIVERS.LOG2
но тем не менее, вопрос открыт: что это?
чему служит куст DRIVERS?. знаю что SYSTEM - конфиг оборудования, SOFTWARE - это HKLM\SOFTWARE. а что такое DRIVERS?
и почему он так "распухает"?.

There were lots of files in C:\Windows\system32\config, named DRIVERS{GUID}.TM.blf. As I found on the internet, the reason for them was Nvidia 3D Vision driver writing to the windows registry(afaik they are kind of journaling), removing the driver and those files solved my problem.
A user (and my savior) reported that the problem stopped once he uninstalled nVidia's 3D vision driver.
nVidia has a crappy service running which is altering the registry every 3 minutes.
Confirm !! Finally a solution :) It is related with nvidia 3d vision.

я вообще то не устанавливаю драйвер от 3D, но как видно себе поставил )
посмотрел список приложений в оффлайн-системе - да, драйвер 3D от NVIDIA там действительно есть.
